This commemorative work announces the entrance to East Austin and honors the spirit and philosophies of civil rights and labor leader Cesar Chavez.
Three different lighting programs are designed to correspond to important dates in Chavez’s life. The base of the sculpture bears the words: “The answer lies with you and me. It is with all men and women who share the suffering and yearn with us for a better world.”
It stands in front of the Terrazas Library, repository for the largest collection of writing on Cesar Chavez in Austin. Designed by Laura Garanzuay, it was installed in 2009. The metal sculpture at the entryway of the Library “El futuro es una página en blanco. ¿Qui escribirás en ella?” (The future is a blank page. What will you write on it?) was created by Connie Arismendi.
