The Paxmal is a peace monument built by Swiss artist, philosopher and pacifist Karl Bickel between 1924 and 1949, in Walenstadtberg above Walenstadt, in front of the Churfirsten mountain range in Switzerland. Paxmal, a fusion of the Latin word “pax” meaning peace and the German word “mal” meaning monument
The left wall depicts the earthly life: a human couple in its existence and development, love and procreation. The right wall is devoted to the spiritual life: the beings who are awakened, struggling, and which keep growing. Carved reliefs adorn the rocks, depicting various themes related to peace – the union of nations, the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature, and the triumph over conflict. Inside the central building there is a small museum about the life of Karl Bickel and the construction of the monument.
