The Joseph Lister Memorial by the sculptor Thomas Brock is in Portland Place in Marylebone. The memorial is positioned in the center of the road, opposite close to Lister’s home at 12 Park Crescent.
The memorial was unveiled by Sir John Bland-Sutton, President of the Royal College of Surgeons, on 13 March 1924. The base of the monument is made of grey Aberdeen granite. On top of the base is a bronze bust of Joseph Lister. At the front are the figures of a woman and a boy: the boy is holding a garland of flowers; the woman is pointing to Lister with her right hand.
Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister, OM, PC, FRS, FRCSE, FRCPGlas, FRCS (5 April 1827 – 10 February 1912) was a British surgeon, medical scientist, experimental pathologist and pioneer of antiseptic surgery and preventive healthcare. his research into bacteriology and infection in wounds revolutionized surgery throughout the world. as a surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, he introduced carbolic acid (modern-day phenol) as a sterilizer for surgical instruments, patients’ skins, sutures, surgeons’ hands, and wards, promoting the principle of antiseptics.
