The Goddess of Peace (Fredsgudinnan) – Nuclear Disarmament monument is made of a 200-year-old anchor, which roughly corresponds to the time Sweden has been at peace. The Swedish–Norwegian War in the summer of 1814 was the last time Sweden participated in an armed conflict with another nation and began the country’s long period of military neutrality.
The sculpture was donated to Gothenburg’s peace-loving people by its creator, Bertil Gustafsson. The monument was dedicated on Hiroshima Day on 6 August 2018 and is managed by FREDSAM, a network of peace associations in Gothenburg that have been working for 40 years for disarmament, especially of nuclear weapons, for human rights and a culture of peace.
