The monument, a globe embossed with peace symbols that also serves as a fountain, was unveiled on May 5, 1995 at the celebration of the liberation of the Netherlands from World War II. Canadian veteran Roger Jean-Marie was present at the unveiling. He was the first Allied soldier to enter Epe (on his motorcycle!) in 1945.
Designer Peta Vlieger made the monument in collaboration with 100 students from the local high school. The students each made an image in wax with the theme peace and justice (Vrede en Gerechtigheid), such as peace signs and doves and the words ‘freedom’ and ‘pax’. Vlieger placed all these images on the sphere, which was then cast in bronze.
At the monument is a poem by Pablo Neruda: “And then the day comes when we liberate light, water, earth and people. Then it will be all for all.”
