The Huseyn Javid Monument (Azerbaijani: Hüseyn Cavidin heykəli), sculpted by Omar Eldarov, was installed in 1993.
Huseyn Javid (Azerbaijani: Hüseyn Cavid), born Huseyn Abdulla oghlu Rasizadeh, was a prominent Azerbaijani poet and playwright of the early 20th century. Javid wrote during the time of Collectivization and Stalin purges. In the worst times of totalitarianism, he refused to serve as propagandist of “revolutionary socialist achievements”. He was arrested in 1937 on trumped-up charges of being a “founding member of a counter-revolutionary group that was plotting an overthrow of the Soviet power” The Soviet government exiled Huseyn Javid to the Far East to Siberia where he died in 1941.
Huseyn Javid was officially exonerated in 1956. Originally, this monument was planned as part of a 100th birthday celebration in 1982 but Azerbaijan’s declaration of independence from the Soviets (October 1981), the dissolution of the USSR (December 1981) and the First Nagorno-Karabakh War (1998-1994) delayed it.
